
Where it's parked matters more than what's on it. Everything else is a distant second.
Most RVs get used a few weeks a year and stored the rest. That storage time is when the damage happens — sitting still, uncovered, under the strongest UV in the country.
So the useful advice isn't about products. It's about the eleven months your rig isn't going anywhere.
If you take one thing from this: a rig under a roof will outlast an identical rig in the open, regardless of what's been applied to either. Covered storage costs money, and it's still the single highest-return decision an Arizona RV owner makes.
Where that's not possible, a quality breathable cover is second best. Not a tarp — tarps trap moisture against the surface and flog in the wind, which abrades gel coat. A fitted breathable cover, secured properly.
Gel coat chalks. UV breaks down the surface until it goes dull and powdery. Once oxidation is properly set in, reversing it means compounding and polishing — considerably more expensive than preventing it.
Graphics crack and fade. Vinyl decals are usually first to go, often within a few years out here. They're also awkward and expensive to replace, since matching a discontinued pattern is often impossible.
Seals dry out. This is the one that costs the most and gets checked the least. Roof seams, window surrounds, vents and slide seals all harden and shrink in this heat. Water getting in behind a failed seal causes damage that dwarfs anything happening to the paint.
Tires age out before they wear out. RV tires typically fail from UV and age rather than mileage. Covers on the tires, and replace on age rather than tread depth.

Twice a year, get on the roof — safely, or pay someone — and look at every seam, vent surround and skylight. You're looking for cracking, shrinkage, or sealant pulling away from the edge.
Resealing is cheap. Water damage inside a wall is not, and by the time you notice it inside, it's been happening for a while. This has nothing to do with coating and it matters more.
Same rules as a car, scaled up.
An RV-specific ceramic coating adds a UV-resistant layer over gel coat and bonds safely to vinyl graphics, which is the part most owners care about. It also makes washing dramatically faster — on forty feet of surface, that's the difference between an afternoon and twenty minutes.
Realistic expectation is five to seven years with proper care. How the rig is stored moves that number more than the product does, which is why this article started where it did.
It gets corrected first — compounding and polishing before anything is applied. Depending on how far it's gone that adds real time and cost, and it isn't optional. Coating over chalked gel coat locks the problem in and wastes the money.
Separate question from coating. A front cap at highway speed takes impact a car bumper never sees — more frontal area, more interstate miles, and everything the vehicle ahead throws up.
RV film runs 10 mil against 7.5 to 8.5 on cars, because it has to. If you tow or drive long distances regularly, film on the front cap and leading edges is the part that prevents damage rather than slowing it. More on RV protection here.
